Renewable energy has become a necessity to be implemented amid the threat of climate crisis; it is no longer a matter of future discourse, it must already be present in our society today. On Saturday, August 2, 2025, Muslim for Shared Action on Climate Impact (MOSAIC) Indonesia, in collaboration with the Central Leadership of Muhammadiyah, successfully inaugurated the installation of solar panels at Masjid Buya Syafii Maarif in Nagari Sumpur Kudus Selatan, Sijunjung District, West Sumatra.
This program is a continuation of the previous Sedekah Energi program, themed “Illuminating with the Sun, Continuing Buya’s Vision.” The program successfully combines spiritual values, social solidarity, and ecological responsibility.
Sedekah Energi is a new form of charity that not only holds spiritual value but also benefits the Earth and the surrounding environment,” said Elok Faiqotul Mutia, Project Lead of Sedekah Energi from MOSAIC. According to her, the program is not only focused on the installation of solar panels but also includes technical training such as energy audits and solar PV installation, which are accessible to the wider community.

In addition, the Head of the Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) Office of West Sumatra Province, Helmi Heryanto, welcomed the initiative. He described the program as a step toward achieving the region’s renewable energy EBT mix targets, which have currently reached 30.59% in primary energy and 52% in electricity generation. These figures are significantly higher than the national average.
The solar power plant built to meet the needs of the mosque and the community can serve as an inspiration for accelerating the transition in other areas, including regions that are not yet fully electrified, such as the Mentawai Islands.
The residents of Nagari Sumpur Kudus Selatan clearly feel the direct benefits of this program. “Alhamdulillah, the mosque we now use for praying is no longer experiences power outages. Previously, we had to pay around Rp 350,000 per month just for electricity,” said Khairul Basri, the Village Chief and Imam of Buya Syafii Maarif Mosque.
The Buya Syafii Maarif Mosque is the sixth stop in the Sedekah Energi program’s journey since its launch in 2022. Previously, the program had reached places of worship in West Nusa Tenggara, Yogyakarta, West Java, and most recently in West Sumatra.

The presence of Sedekah Energi at Buya Syafii Maarif Mosque affirms that the energy transition is not only for big cities or massive government-led industrial projects. It can start from villages, from the spiritual heart of the community, the mosque. Lighting up spaces with solar energy is a new way of giving, not only for the benefit of fellow human beings but also for the future of our planet.
We firmly believe that Sedekah Energi can serve as a bridge of goodness for both people and nature. Let us continue to support movements like this so that more houses of worship and communities can become energy-resilient, economically independent, and strong in the face of the climate crisis.
