On Saturday, December 14, 2024, Enter Nusantara participated in an interactive talk show entitled “Rona Fatamorgana,” organized by Greenpeace Indonesia and attended by various organizations, communities, and the general public. This talk show aims to educate and invite the public, especially the younger generation, to switch to renewable energy as a solution to the climate crisis.
The climate crisis is not a backstory like in fictional movies; it is already threatening civilization today, especially Indonesia. The year 2024 is almost certain to be the hottest year on record, with global average temperatures for the first time exceeding 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels. Indonesia consistently records the hottest monthly temperatures in 2024. September, for example, was the hottest month on record, with a monthly average temperature of 27.4°C, deviating +0.9°C from the 1991-2020 normal.

The climate crisis is exacerbating extreme weather, including heatwaves, storms, floods, and forest fires that are increasingly occurring with greater intensity than ever before. To address the global climate crisis, renewable energy is the solution. However, despite its abundant potential, Indonesia is still stuck on fossil energy dependency and “new energy” solutions that can often add negative impacts to the environment. In this talk show, Enter Nusantara would like to introduce and invite Indonesians to be more critical in understanding the fundamental differences between renewable energy and new energy solutions that are often not entirely environmentally friendly.
Indonesia has a big challenge to achieve its renewable energy mix target of 23% by 2025. However, with the dominance of fossil energy and new energy solutions that often still have a negative impact on the environment, the journey towards this target is becoming increasingly difficult. Moreover, recent data shows that more than 85% of Indonesia’s electricity still comes from burning fossil fuels such as coal, gas, and oil.

Another challenge in achieving the use of renewable energy in Indonesia is that there are still various obstacles in the field that need to be improved, one of which is the aspect of justice. The implementation of renewable energy should not only consider the technical and economic aspects but also the social and environmental impacts faced by the community. Some of our colleagues in the field, especially in areas directly affected by renewable energy projects, often have to face injustices that occur, both in terms of access to cleaner energy and the social impacts caused by policy changes, said Reka Maharwati, Coordinator at Enter Nusantara.
However, there is hope. With the crowded participation, especially the younger generation who participated in the “Rona Fatamorgana” event, there is a great opportunity to encourage renewable energy that is fair and more environmentally friendly. Enter Nusantara continues to commit and invite the younger generation to continue to play an active role in fighting for a more environmentally friendly future by using equitable renewable energy.

The “Rona Fatamorgana” event is not just an ordinary talk show; this event presents various interesting activities such as poetry musicalization, exhibitions, and live music. The event was successfully organized with the participation of various different backgrounds such as academics, researchers, young people and the general public. This event also provides an opportunity to expand networks, share information, and collaborate with various communities and stakeholders in an effort to create real change for a better future of the earth because good cooperation will provide a high spirit of change to accelerate an equitable energy transition.
Through this event, Enter Nusantara continues to invite all groups to realize and commit to supporting and accelerating the use of equitable renewable energy. By supporting the programs presented by Enter Nusantara, we will take an important step in accelerating the transition to equitable renewable energy, as well as being able to create a healthier and environmentally friendly earth for everyone.
